Our Journey To Excellence

"I believe that Nursing at Winter Haven Hospital has always been about competence and caring. It was that strong nursing culture that led us to decide in 2003 to begin our magnet journey. In July of 2006, we sent our letter of intent to the ANCC and began the application process. We will send our completed documentation in March 2008 and expect that we will receive a site visit in the summer of 2008."

The American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) MAGNET DESIGNATION was introduced by CNO Mary Jo Schreiber as the proven vehicle to guide us to a level of clinical & organizational excellence that few hospitals reach-ever. She presented the Magnet story and journey to the Senior Leadership Team and then to the hospital's Board of Directors-both of whom were touched by her passion and confidence that Winter Haven Hospital had what it took. Based on this recommendation, they agreed to wholeheartedly support our quest for excellence through the pursuit of Magnet designation. They have never once faltered nor questioned that decision, in the five years since. Board members have participated in various hospital committees, in the development of the Magnet application and they review data monthly. What was once a business-driven Board with little medical understanding is now a clinically focused group, reviewing patient data and clinical outcomes rather than solely business numbers. This is due to the direct influence of Mary Jo, who attends monthly meetings, teaches and clarifies often nebulous clinical information for them, enhancing their understanding of clinical issues and priorities. Her passion and enthusiasm for what she does is contagious-it has captured their attention and confidence and has ultimately redirected their focus to one of the patient rather than the business. Our Journey to Excellence-that is, achieving a true culture of excellence at Winter Haven Hospital-has become central to our mission, our goals, and our objectives. It drives our strategic goals and influences every aspect of the organization, top to bottom and everything in between!

We are excited about what is happening at Winter Haven Hospital! We are excited to be participating in the process to obtain Magnet designation.
