For many people, summer means fun in the sun. The children are out of school and adults are on vacation, it's a perfect time for outdoor activities such as swimming, biking, hiking, family reunions and picnics. Remember to take precautions to make summer activities safe and always use safety equipment such as seat belts, helmets and life jackets. The 100 Challenge ‘Served Up’ a Success
Twenty tennis teams and six golf teams challenged themselves to play 100 games of tennis and 100 holes of golf. The result: more than $108,000 to go toward the Winter Haven Hospital Stroke Center. Rain extended the tennis challenge to four days, but the weather was beautiful for golf. The event’s first silent auction, held during the ultra suave “Swinging back to the 70’s” cocktail party at the Lake Region Yacht and Country Club, was successful too. The most popular item, a day with Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, raised more than $16,000. The Winter Haven Hospital is thankful for the ever increasing support from community members, golfers, tennis players, and those who reminisce the 70’s alike.

UNDERSTANDING STROKE
"It was early evening and we were watching our usual TV program when suddenly the left side of my body went limp and I slumped over in the chair. I tried to call out for help but the words that came out of my mouth were garbled. I remember feeling very confused and fearful. Later that night in the hospital I was told that I had a stroke."
Stroke, better known as "Brain Attack" is the leading cause of disability in the United States. Over 700,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. Winter Haven Hospital has made a commitment to the community to reduce the incidents and severity of strokes by educating the community on how to reduce the risks factors of stroke and teaching everyone how important it is to seek emergency treatment as soon as the symptoms begin because "Time is Brain".

Giving Care, Taking Care
The handwritten note on the Thank You card reads "Thank you to the nurses at the Regency Women’s Fair who insisted that I be transported to the hospital for evaluation of my high blood pressure. It was 200/100 and I had a severe headache when I arrived via ambulance at the ER. They found I had had a stroke but I was lucky in that I was treated right away."
A sincere message of gratitude------
A strong message of warning--------

Health and Wellness
Submitted by: Kimberly T Jackson, DO., family physician at the Dundee Family Health Center
Everyone wants to be healthy, but what does that mean? Health is defined as a state of physical and mental well-being and being free from disease. In most cases, it is much easier to talk about disease rather than health. But what does it take to become healthy? Sometimes it is as simple as knowing what you should be doing to stay healthy or what tests you should have to monitor your health. First, you should get your annual physical exams. It is during these times that a physician has the opportunity to assess what your regular body function is and make suggestions of adjustments to your diet and exercise regimen to maintain your health. Most people only see the doctor when something is wrong. It is important to be proactive and attempt to prevent disease rather than be reactive and want to fix it after-the-fact. To provide some insight into what you can do to be in your best health at any age a discussion follows addressing men’s health, women’s health, eye care, dental care, exercise, nutrition, skin cancer, sexual health, and drugs and alcohol.
